Purchasing Michigan Auto No-Fault Insurance

Many people around the State of Michigan have plenty of free time on their hands thanks to COVID-19 and the governor’s stay-at-home order.  Some folks are using this time to shore up personal finance issues, like refinancing their homes, taking a closer look at their budgets, or even shopping around for the best and cheapest insurance.

When it comes to shopping for auto insurance in Michigan, it is easy to just look for the cheapest rate and go with that option, BUT BUYER BEWARE.  Recent changes to the Michigan Auto No-Fault Insurance Act have removed some of the protections we are used to.  Unsuspecting insurance shoppers can end up purchasing poor coverage that comes back to bite them if they or a loved one are injured in an auto accident, or if they negligently injure another.

Previously, all auto insurance coverage in Michigan provided unlimited medical coverage for injuries sustained in an auto accident.  Not anymore.  Insurance companies can now sell cheaper policies with limited medical coverage.  That means a person with catastrophic injuries from an auto accident might get stuck with big medical bills.  It also means excessive medical bills can now be charged against the person who caused the accident, if the injured party doesn’t have sufficient coverage.

It is a good idea to pay a little extra to ensure you and your family have unlimited medical coverage.  It is also a good idea to purchase a high limit on your bodily injury/liability insurance, in case you accidentally injure another person while driving.  Finally, it is a good idea to purchase a high limit of uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage—this will help cover you if another driver injures you and he or she does not have good insurance coverage.
